Day 2 delivers… Big time.

Day 2 of the 2017 Nats delivered even more close and competitive racing in picture perfect conditions…

A second Slalom Table was completed in full, then the remaining heats of Table 1 were sailed in an action packed morning of racing over Green Islands legendary Reef Flats course at the SE corner of the island. While some delivered exceptional performances, others stumbled with a unforced errors on water creating some deviation from the anticipated results amongst top racers..

Staying cool and understated, Max Gaubert came out on top of Table 2 followed closely by versatile and stylish New Caledonian Alex Rouys. West Aus had some points on the table with local “export” Ben Newson carving his way into 3rd slot just ahead of Freerace ranking leader Byron McIlveen.

With falling tides, the Reef Flats slalom was closed down and a GPS Freerace course set back on the Northern run side of the island, this time in more exposed choppy water and some ridiculously close results again separated the leading 3 contenders by less than 0.2kt over the hour. Byron McIlveen showed consistent form and endurance in the 2 heats to date, leading home Kaleb Smith and Ales Rouys from local champion Kelly Morgan. Enthusiastic and challenging racing at all levels of the Freerace fleet kept everybody racing their best until the final drop of the flag to close out racing at 3.30pm
