It’s Party Time In Sydney

Prizegiving & Party

The Prizegiving Ceremony for the 2009 Oceanic & Australian Formula Windsurfing Championships kicked off tonight at the Royal Hotel; one the famous Sydney nightspots in Paddington. In true Aussie style, there was enough beer, champagne and wine to keep the thirsty mob partying on until the wee hours of the morning. Taking the Australian Title for the 3rd time this event was Sean O’Brien from Brisbane, with Sam Fawkes from Lake Macquarie finishing in 2nd overall [Sam actually missed the party to jump on a plane and fly to the West Coast of Australia to compete in the Ledge-to-Lancelin race which begins tomorrow morning!) and Sam Parker from Sydney 3rd overall and 1st Master. Allison Shreeve finished 7th overall against the Men and took out the ladies prize with Bruce Healey winning the FE+ division, Rick Murray winning the Grand Masters and all the way from Denmark, Christian Justesen [aka, JV junior] took out the Youth Prize. Lighter Winds; More Racing; Prizes! Party!

Final Day Results

The wind conditions lightened today for the final day of racing at the 2009 Oceanic and Australian Formula Windsurfing Championships in Sydney. The experienced race-crew again managed to get the maximum amount of races today running 4 back-to-back races for the sailors to take advantage of the morning winds which lightened and shifted as the day wore on. The lighter winds allowed some sailors the opportunity to climb the rankings after yesterday’s strong winds and big seas. Sean O’Brien (AUS-120) managed to hold on to his lead and the Australian Title today taking two bullets in the first two races before losing his cool in the last two races taking 4th’s a piece in the shifty, light afternoon winds. Super Strong Winds and Carnage on Day 3

Day 4 racing and action

The 3rd day of racing at the 2009 Formula Windsurfing Oceanic and Australian Championships in Sydney, Australia, kicked off today with howling southerly winds up to 30 knots at times. The race-crew were out on the water to get Race 4 of the event away today on time at 12.30pm with the winds sitting around 15-18 knots and most of the fleet electing to take out their 11m rigs. Shortly before the start, the wind increased another 8-10 knots which left many sailors struggling with their big rigs to get around the course; Sean O’Brien (AUS-120) being one of those - taking a big spill whilst in the lead on the final downwind to allow Sam Parker (AUS-3), Brett Morris (AUS-8) and Sam Fawkes (AUS-21) through and finished in 4th… [read more]

No racing completed on Day 2

FW-Australia Day 2

Another blisteringly hot Aussie summer day awaited the competitors as they arrived at Ramsgate Beach for the second day of racing at the 2009 FW Oceanic & Australian Championships. With two opposing forecasts, one of 25 knots and the other of light winds; the race crew wasn’t sure what to expect today except the knowledge that whatever the wind, it would be really HOT at the beach. The wind stayed true to the BOM forecast with it shifting to the north-east early in the day and starting to build slightly for the race-crew to get a start off around 2pm…. [read more]

Picture Perfect Race Day 1

FW-Australia 2009

A picture perfect day greeted the competitors of the 2009 Formula Windsurfing Oceanic and Australian Championships in Sydney, Australia today. As the first Continental Championship event for Formula Windsurfing (FW) in 2009, Sydney lived up to expectations with a sunny, warm and windy day providing three races for the competitors.

With the first race kicking off at 1.45pm, there was already a cruisy 10-12 knot Easterly winds at Ramsgate Beach, Botany Bay (Sydney) at the race site and most of the fleet were out on the water early to get used to the conditions. Queenslander Sean O’Brien (AUS-120) enjoyed a great day taking 3 bullets from 3 starts on his 25th Birthday to lead the event on 2.25 points nearly 6 points clear of youngster Sam Fawkes (AUS-21) on 8 points and a returned to form Mike Nelson (AUS-12) on 12 points. Our World Champion Allison Shreeve (AUS-911) took it up to the boys in every race today; finishing 4th in Race 3 which slots her into 5th overall on the first day. Sam Parker (AUS-3) had a disappointing end to the day after a great start following Sean into 2nd in the first race - but still has plenty of time to rise up the ladder and battle for the illustrious Australian FW Title. In the relatively newly established Formula Experience Plus (FE+) class, Bruce Healey (AUS-9) took all 3 bullets today and shows a strong chance of taking out the title. Read more
